The Blair Wife Project: 9.30.17

Houston, we have a venue!

After an unexpected detour, Cody and I have signed a contact with Mill 1 at Open Square.  To keep it short, we ended up adding two last minute tours after we were pleasantly surprised with how much we legit liked estate/mansion venues.  We checked out Wadsworth Mansion in Middletown (it ended up being between Mill 1 and this place) and the Mansion at Harkness Park (or at least we tried…the coordinator may or may not have blown us off for a tour. Not cool.). I may eventually do a review of those venues down the line but for now I’m set to move on.

The staff at Mill 1 made the contract signing process super relaxed. We toured the spaces again briefly. They were actually setting up for a wedding reception while we were there, lucky us! It was great to see the space set up. There was no question in our mind about getting married at the Mill 1 after that for us.
Our coordinator, Denise, is new but is training side-by-side with Maggie whom we met during our tour.  I could tell after the first five minutes of chatting with Denise about her experience and event style (the second we stepped into the office my eye went immediately to a set of antique mirrors she purchased at an auction for the bathrooms) that we would get along just fine. We settled in the back office with Denise and John, the owner of Mill 1 and found out they have a DOG whom I was, of course, head over heals in love with at first sight.  Cute dog, perfect venue, happy fiancĂ© – it’s a surprise I did not spontantiously combust (with joy).
I found it super refreshing the owner John insisted we comb through the contract together so there were no surprises especially due to the fact there are some changes going on with their catering company. They put a clause in our contract that allows us to back out with a full refund if we aren’t happy with whom they’ve chosen as an exclusive caterer (if they do) and promised to let us know what they’ve decided by July. Of all I’ve read and researched, the biggest advice people give is to get everything in writing and Mill 1 was a step ahead of us. I have my fingers crossed it will all work out and that the new company will be more keen to help decorating.

After we agreed on the contract, the conversation turned to selecting a date. A DATE. AH!  Cody and I did not have a special, specific date in mind. Our anniversary is in February and neither of us wanted to get married then. We knew we wanted to stay away from October as it is a popular month for friends and family anniversaries. There are about 600 birthdays in May for my family and Cody traditionally is in a constant state of melting June and July.  So after factoring all that in, we both quickly agreed on a fall wedding and for a long time we were talking about early November. Wait, late September. End of November. Early October? Didn’t we say November? But why not September? How much money can we save if we pick blah blah blah.
We were still debating back and forth up until the car ride up. By that point I was pretty set on what I wanted but for some odd reason, I felt it should be Cody to pick. I severely doubt this feeling will surface much more during the process (sorry babe) so with high hopes and expectations, I turned to him and blurted rather curtly “What do you want? Seriously, just tell me and I’m set.”  To which he replied, much to my relief, “I don’t want to wait until November”.

Flash forward an hour later and we are in the office staring at the huge calendar they have with different names penciled in on assorted Fridays and Saturdays 2016-2017 knowing that one of those boxes was about to be branded Blair wedding.

We decided on Saturday, September 30th, 2017. It already feels like ours. Funny enough, it was the verbal commitment to the date that got me, but rather the casual observation of our wedding coordinator who pointed out our first joint checking account check was our deposit on our venue. Cue the waterworks and ugly crying face. Thank God the owner started talking about the liquor options and I was able to collect myself until Cody and I got outside.  I’m weird, I know.
So the question becomes, what is next? Having a venue and a date opens Pandora’s frilly bridal box. I quickly consulted the two (thanks Mom and Bri) bridal timelines I have and start checking off what we had already done which, side note, was oddly satisfying in the same way plucking my eyebrows is. Some of the suggestions I’m questioning already….for instance; create a wedding website (Whaaaa? Does this count?) or have an engagement party (-heavy breathing- I can’t plan two parties).

As far as being 12+ months out, the big ones that stand out to me to get accomplished soon are:

Outline the initial guest list – CHECK!
Research and book priority vendors – I smell a future blog post
Choose your wedding party – bride squad baby

I am actually really looking forward to these next steps. Cody and I actually drafted our guest list the night we got engaged, over pizza and booze no less, so all that needs is a little tweaking and address gathering. I have already reached out to two photographers, two videographers, and a DJ all of whom either come highly recommended by friends or have blogs I’ve stalked for the last six months. And assembling my squad?  I’ve been waiting to be able to start asking my girls since I said yes.

It’s fun to be the one asking. I get to experience a tiny sliver of the nerves and excitement Cody talks about when he was getting ready to ask me.  Totally planning on a fully emotional girl-power gush-fest of a post about the bridal party once they’ve all been asked properly and (eee!) hopefully say yes so I better get going!

Here goes nothing!

AHHHHH!!!!  I opened my email to get Cate's newest post and may or may not have almost caused Ant to drive off the road when I yelled in surprise/excitement!! I couldn't text Cate quick enough to say YES YES YES (with lots of emojis).  I am honored she asked, and I can NOT wait to be a part of their day!!

Wedding Dress Inspiration: Truvelle Bridal

Ok, so Cate just sent me another STUNNER by Truvelle the other night (pictured below), which reminded me that I've been meaning to share this particular post for quite awhile.

Truvelle is a designer I stumbled across a few months ago that I absolutely adore.  I want to have a vow renewal somewhere super romantic in one of these beauties.  Italy, a deserted beach somewhere, the south of France....I'm not picky....as long as it's tomorrow, preferably ;)  The simple, delicate straps and beautiful bows are just too pretty.  This next picture is the first one I saw scrolling IG that literally stopped me in my tracks.

Ever since, I've followed along and love every style!!  They are so simple and so unique.
I love the mix of colors and textures that the designer Gaby includes in her styles.  Also, all of her bridal designs are very afforable!  Most are priced around $1500, give or take a little.  The only bummer here is that currently they are not stocked in any CT bridal boutiques! (road trip, Cate??) There are a couple nearby, in MA and NY though, and you can order them directly on ETSY as well!

West Coast Road Trip: Day 2

Day 2 we woke up in Sonoma and wanted to get an early start, to make the most of our one full day in wine country!

We LOVE going out to breakfast, so we started the day in downtown Sonoma at the Sunflower Caffe.    This place was adorable - it was slightly cool that morning so we had the entire, very lime green back patio to ourselves. We both got toasts (his savory, mine sweet) that were delicious.

After that we headed off to our first vineyard of the day, Domaine Carneros.  Ant's cousins Sabrina and Keith had suggested this one to us.  They had enjoyed it on their visit to Napa, and we liked that they specialized in sparking wines, so it was a little different than the other vineyards we planned to visit!  This was the only vineyard we crossed into Napa for - it was located right on the main road connecting Sonoma and Napa.  We were a little early, so we wasted a few minutes driving down the back roads exploring the vineyards!

Domaine Carneros Chateau is absolutely stunning.  All of their tastings are done as table service (prices starting @ $30), so Ant and I got a table along the balcony and enjoyed the views while tasting a flight of their sparkling wine.  As we were chatting with our waiter, we mentioned that we typically enjoy reds, and he started telling us that Domaine Carneros specializes in sparkling wines and Pinot Noirs, which we hadn't realized!  He had us try a few of their Pinots, which we also loved.
Their wine club was the most user friendly we had seen - so we signed up for their two bottle club.  They ship 6 times a year, so every other month we get two bottles sent!  You can choose each time before they ship whether you want red or sparkling, which works out great.  All winter we've been getting Pinot Noirs, and when our June order ships I'll switch it to sparkling for the summer!  It's the best of both worlds.  They also don't have a cancellation fee, as long as you get at least three shipments.  We're way past that, and don't intend to cancel anytime soon.  The bottles are slightly more expensive then what we buy on a regular trip to the package store, but I love taking the guesswork out of it!  I know the wine we're going to get is going to be good, and it's a nice reminder of our trip every 8 weeks :)
Once we signed up for the club our waiter brought us a few more of their premium sparkling wines to try, and so we sat for awhile longer enjoying the weather and the view.  We spent way more time at Domaine Carneros than we had originally intended, but we didn't have any real plans until our 1pm Hanzell tour, so we just enjoyed relaxing there!

Driving up to Hanzell was a totally different experience!  We had to go back through downtown Sonoma, and then way up onto a hillside to get to the vineyard.  Their tours & tastings are not free - they have two versions, one that is $45 and one that is $65.  Each can hold up to six people, but we ended up having a private tour with just the two of us!  The tour took us down into the vineyard in a land rover, and our guide told us all about the history of the property and the vines.
After the tour of the vines, we went down into their wine caves, and learned more about their wine making philosophy and their history.  The tour ended with a private tasting in their Heritage Winery.  Hanzell has so much history in Sonoma, and with it's location way up on the hill the views overlooking the town were incredible.  The wine was significantly more expensive then some of the other vineyards we had been to, but we bought a bottle of chardonnay home with us.  If you are looking for a unique and memorable experience while visiting Sonoma, I couldn't recommend Hanzell more highly!

Our last vineyard of the day was Benziger Family Winery.  Benziger has been a certified Biodynamic farm since 2000 and their Partners Wine Tour has been voted best winery tour in Sonoma multiple years, so Ant and I decided it was worth checking out!  Again, these tours are limited to 8 guests, but Ant and I ended up with another private tour!  The benefits of visiting on a Friday I would assume?
This tour gave us a behind the scenes look at their estate vineyard, including the wine caves.  The tour included a barrel tasting (which neither of us had done before!) and ended with a tasting of estate wines in the wine cave.

Ant and I really enjoyed all three of our vineyard experiences on Friday.  Probably my favorite part was how we ended up seeing three very different vineyards, which VERY different types of visits & experiences at each!  We fell into each vineyard through recommendations/by accident, so I thought we were very lucky to have it work out as well as it did!

After our final wine tour, we headed back downtown to have dinner at Harvest Moon Cafe.  I wish I had pictures of it - they have a beautiful patio that they cover up so it can be used year round (it was still too cool for open air when we were there).  They have a highly personalized dinner menu that changes daily, so you are always getting the freshest ingredients!  We enjoyed our meal, then headed back to our place.  We had a VERY early start the next morning to get back to San Fran!

We absolutely LOVED Sonoma - good wine and good food, what's not to love?  Have you been?  What vineyards/wineries did you love?

xoxo
