The Blair Wife Project: Wedding Dress Pilgrimage

It’s been a while but I promise it has been for good reason.  A lot has happened since my last post. For starters, it’s been babies galore. My cousin had her baby and three of my bridesmaids are brewing little bundles. Cody and I booked our caterer.  My sister came home from Hawaii for a visit. We said goodbye to my Grandpa. Cody and I awkwardly fumbled through our engagement photo session. Season 7 of Walking Dead started.

It’s been nuts.

Amidst all this I have also embarked on the mini-pilgrimage within Cody and I’s epic adventure known as wedding dress shopping.  A divine and critical mile-marker I have both been excitedly anticipating and dreading. You read that correctly . It is very possible to experience extremes at the same time.  Imagine sneezing. You get super relieved (‘I’ve been staring at the ceiling for 10 minutes waiting for this bad boy’) and super anxious (‘omg, my eyes are going to pop out’) for a millisecond. Same concept.
For starters, regular shopping gives me a headache. Clothing shopping, grocery shopping, even a trip to CVS; it’s just annoying. Unless it’s Target I’m not a fan. I’m especially bad at clothing shopping. What will look good? What size will fit?  Where the hell is the aisle for dress pants, again? I often gather up an armful of things to try on and end up abandoning them halfway to the dressing room in favor of leaving the store all together. Woof.

Secondly, I have awful body image. I am not able to compare my experience to others and I know it is way too common but all I can say is I am very aware the way I view myself is not normal.  After years of working on it, continuing to work at it, I still see pictures and often don’t recognize the body attached to my face. Personal scrutiny unfortunately remains my automatic setting.  I’m especially terrible when I’m stressed.
The week or so before my first dress appointment, my anxiety built up nice and slow. A potent and rather confusing mixture of angst and enthusiastic anticipation because I freaking out over an appointment that I decided to book, furthermore, a group event complete with champagne and photographer. I had done this because I thought it would be a fun and a nice way to bring all the bridesmaids together. We would go and play dress up, there would be mild tension often featured on Say Yes to The Dress, then we would laugh and cry and it would be over.  Well there was no tension – my bridesmaids are the chillest bunch of girls. My mom and MIL-to-be were calm and after the first 2-3 dresses, so was I.  The hives faded fast (yes, I broke out in hives) and we all discovered the more I looked disgusted, the more it meant I liked the dress.  I was hoping it would be a one and done scenario.  Max two. That was the dream.
What we also discovered is that this was a lot harder than I wanted it to be.  The common pattern I noticed throughout almost all my dress appointments was I could usually narrow it down to two dresses that were always POLAR opposites. One that often fit what I always thought I wanted and one that was unexpectedly simple or more traditional.  I quickly spiraled deep into an existential crisis.  What did I really want to look like on my wedding day? Had it all been a lie? What did people think I would wear? Does my mom like it enough? What would Cody like best? WHO AM I?

After much soul searching, two factors emerged as critical to narrowing down my search: budget & vision.
Budget.  For me, I couldn’t see myself spending tons of money on one dress that I would wear one time. I have nothing against brides who spend $8000 on a wedding dress.  If you have the funds and most importantly, you feel amazing – go bananas.  I’ve just never been someone to spend a lot of money on clothing. I remember one of my homecoming dresses cost literally nine dollars. The dress I wore to Ant and Rachel’s wedding - $14 on clearance at T.J.Maxx. So while my first appointment at The White Dress By The Shore was a blast, not one dress was remotely CLOSE to my budget and that was a tremendous turn off. I knew my realistic selection walking into that place would be limited by my budget and it was very much intended to be a preliminarily appointment to try on different dress styles but what I learned was as the bride it was my job to keep that number in mind during the entire appointment. I needed to set the tone and I did not. I just let people pull dresses and crawled inside. Thankfully I did not find anything I NEEDED to have so from that appointment on, I made it clear I did not want to try on anything that wasn’t within the budget. I played low-ball. I came to appreciate the attendants (especially at Trinket Shoppe, Bliss Bridal, and The Wedding Embassy) who listened and would double check the price tag with me prior to pulling a dress.

Vision. The constant snag in the line. I felt so tightly wrapped up in the multiple layers of what I envisioned my dress to look like.  It was not just what I had in my head but also what I thought other people would expect. While Cody and I have taken a firm joint stance on doing what we want above the suggestions of others for our wedding day, I do admit I felt a little more pressure to ensure my dress lived up to whatever precedent my individual style has conjured up for people. There was a weird disconnect between dresses I WANTED to love and how I actually felt in them. I would often love the back of dresses but not the front or vice versa. The sleeves of sample gowns were unfitted and disappointing.  I routinely felt good in dresses I hadn’t ever imagined myself in but still harbored a longing for the phantom dream dress of my dreams. I think largely due to being sick of the process, I resigned toward the end I would let go of my vision in favor of a budget friendly, more traditional style dress that was both beautiful and comfortable.  It was, after all I told myself, was a just a dress.
I was convinced I was going to pick this comfort dress. I found it by myself, got teary eyed, and immediately made an appointment for my mom to see. Being local to the shop, I invited Rachel and Sabrina along and I was excitedly texting them leading up to the appointment. When I say I was ready to close the book, I mean it.  I even told Cody as I left for my appointment that I was going to be buying my dress that day.

I decided to try on a few dresses with the comfort dress mixed in to gauge my mom, Rachel, and Sabrina’s honest reaction to the dress.  This is key because at this point, I still cared if they liked it or not. There were definitely ones that fit into my abandoned “vision” theme but even so, I was itching to get to the dress and show them.
Well, the dress I tried before trying on the comfort dress was one I had been casually looking for whenever I went to a shop that carried the designer. I pulled it that day to try on largely just to be able to say I had after the fact but when I put it on, something just clicked.  It was as effortless and bright as turning on a light switch. The dress had all the small pieces of other dresses I loved but more importantly, it was the only wedding dress I’d tried on that I wholeheartedly felt was 100% me.  I walked out and did not need to see my mom, Rachel, or Sabrina’s faces for approval. I literally hopped onto the little pedestal thing, found my reflection and painfully grinned in complete defeat. For giggles, they had me put the comfort one on and I could not get out of it fast enough to put my dress back on.  No tears, no stress, no drama.  Just like that I said, “Okay, cool. This is it. Yup! I’m good”.

Dress shopping with Cate was SO much fun.  She looks annoyingly amazing in everything ;) - so we got to see so many stunning different styles come to life when she would try them on.  I LOVED watching her work through her vision of her day and can not WAIT to see Cody's face when he sees her in "the dress" next September!

Franklins World: The North Fork

When we travel, we are nothing if not organized.  That doesn't mean that EVERY minute is planned out - spontaneity has created some of my favorite travel moments ever.....but we certainly do our research beforehand when we're walking into something new.

This past April we went on a mini mid-week vacation to the North Fork with friends of ours!  Angie and Nate had been SO sweet and suggested that we bring Franklin along...which turned out to be the best idea ever.  All four of us work retail of some sort, so mid-week was just as easy to plan as any other normal person's three day long weekend.  We went Wednesday - Friday, the third week of April.  April in New England is a crapshoot to begin with, so we figured it would be the perfect off peak time to go enjoy the vineyards before the crowds got crazy!    We found an AirBNB that was dog friendly right in downtown Greenport, and off we went!

Before we left, I did a LOT of research into the different vineyards on the North Fork.  They fell into one of a few categories: dog friendly, "BYOS" (bring your own snacks) friendly, neither, or both.  While I didn't want our trip to feel overly rigid and planned out, I did want us to know going into it where Franklin would be welcomed, and when we'd need to leave him behind in the apartment!

As it turned out - we could not have gotten luckier with the weather!  We had weather that was sunny and 70 most of the time, which allowed us to bring Franklin along and enjoy many more outdoor spaces.  Since it was still only mid April, and mid week, we had the vineyards to ourselves probably 80% of the time - and when we weren't alone there were never more than a couple other groups around.  This made the entirely trip TOTALLY relaxing and enjoyable, and Franklin was the best behaved pup the entire time!
There are a couple of websites that talk about dog-friendly vineyards, but here's an overview of our personal experiences:

Bedell Cellars:
As soon as we got off the ferry we headed straight to Bedell.  Bedell Cellars states online that dogs are allowed outside, and *update* no outside food is allowed.  (When we were there in April you were allowed to bring outside food)  When we called to confirm that they were dog friendly, the woman told us that since it was so quiet, we could even bring Franklin inside, as long as no other patrons complained.  When we arrived we were the only ones inside the tasting room, so we enjoyed a full tasting to kick off our trip!  We then took a bottle outside, and enjoyed the view of the vineyard while eating our lunch.
Raphael:
Raphael does not allow outside food, but is the only place that very clearly states on their site that dogs are welcomed both inside and outside of the tasting room.  We have been to the North Fork many times, but never been to Raphael - they are often closed for private functions!  So we were thrilled to find them open when we arrived.  Raphael's building is absolutely beautiful, and we enjoyed a tasting at the bar in the center of their main room.

Duck Walk:
Duck Walk was the last vineyard we visited on our first day.  They have such a large variety of wines it was a little overwhelming.  We just grabbed a bottle and brought it outside to enjoy on their patio - again we were the only ones outside so I was able to let Franklin run around off leash!
The Lenz Winery:
Based on what I read online, I believe Lenz would be dog friendly in their outdoor area, however we planned our second morning to go to all of the places we couldn't take Franklin - so we just didn't have him when we did our traditional 10AM visit to Lenz!  Most vineyards open around 11 or 12, but Lenz is famous in our world for their early hours.  We also love their wine, so we make a point to go there first thing in the morning when we're visiting - another perfect way to beat the crowds!

Sparkling Pointe:
Sparkling Pointe is not dog friendly, nor outside food friendly...but their sparkling wines are delicious and so it's a necessary stop!  They also do table service for your tasting, so you can enjoy the weather outside rather than standing at the bar.

Kontokosta Winery:
Another winery that does not allow dogs or outside food.  In this case, their views are a necessary stop so we forgave them and made the trip!  They are the first vineyard you get to coming from the ferry - and they have a sprawling lawn leading up to a cliff looking over the water.
Mattabella Vineyards:
Mattabella is another favorite of mine.  They have an extremely adorable outside seating area - so every group gets to sit at their own table with either chairs or benches - they even have blankets for the cooler temps to keep you cozy!  They offer a red or white tasting, and include some "bites" to go along with the tastings. AND!  Dog friendly :) We often take a bottle of their wine home with us.

Palmer Vineyards:
Palmer is pet friendly in their outside seating area - and ended up being another hit!  Their indoor space looked like an english style pub, and they had tons of patio and lawn seating outside.  Ant and I ended up joining their wine club, so we get 3 bottles from them 4 times a year!  It's been a really nice reminder of the trip.  It's also a really great "easy in, easy out" location with tons of parking, so I've recommended it to friends and family looking to grab good wine when in the area!
As an added bonus, we also stopped by the Greenport Harbor Brewing Co.  They have two locations - their original one in downtown Greenport, and an expanded space a little further down in Peconic.  We brought Franklin with us to the Peconic location and enjoyed a beer flight for a change in scenery!
Overall, our mini getaway was absolutely amazing!  We loved being able to get away with friends, without having to leave Franklin behind. (although there are many grandparents always happy to have him!!)

Have you been to any of the vineyards on Long Island?  Which is your favorite??  Ever since getting pregnant I have been counting down the days until my next vineyard visit!

6 months: baby girl Mascia!

A lot has happened in the last few months - 6, specifically.  Ant and I found out that we are expecting our first child next January!  We have since learned that "it" is a she, and have named her Tilly Elizabeth :)  Her due date is January 23rd, but regardless of when she actually arrives, we know that 2017 is going to be an exciting year for our family!

I had meant to post a few updates before now, but we're officially at 6 months this week and I thought I'd go back through the last 6 months with a few photo updates.  Going back through these pictures was quite a trip - it's crazy to think about all of the things that have changed (most noticeably, my body!) over these months.

May 18:  This picture of the three of us was taken celebrating my birthday at Chaffinch....we had no idea then that we were actually 4.5 weeks pregnant.

May 21:  I took a LOT of other pictures that morning - but most of them are more personal for Ant and I.  This was the morning I took the positive pregnancy test(s)!!  What a crazy, sweet morning.

May 22: Because of my terrible timing - and not wanting to tell Ant the news via text message...I had to wait an entire 36 hours to let him know he was going to be a father!  Photo quality is terrible...and I don't care one bit.  That was the best night.  We just sat and talked for hours about our new future.

May 25 & June 8 (5 and 7 weeks): Looking back, these photos crack me up, but I am so so glad I took them!  Obviously, I am not showing yet...but it's fun to go back and see.  June 8 was our first Drs appointment and ultrasound, at 7.5 weeks.  There is hardly anything big enough to see on that ultra sound - but the doctor was able to show us the heart beat!

June 12, 18, & 26:  We wanted to tell our families in person, and got lucky enough that we had plans to see all of them over the course of three weekends right after our first ultrasound: first my parents, then his parents, then my sisters.  We told our parents using the sign on the new wall/door we were installing for what is now the nursery, and I had these bracelets made on ETSY for my sisters.  The bracelets spell "aunt" in morse code, so they could wear them even before they were allowed to talk about it with the general public :)  We had SO MUCH FUN sharing the news!!  Everyone was so surprised and thrilled, and reacted in such special ways.

July 9:  I spent weeks 11/12 in Canada exploring Banff National Park with Katie! I was lucky to have a very healthy first trimester...baby M was a total trooper on all of our crazy adventures!

July 13 (12 weeks):  The day after I got back from Canada, Ant and I had our first trimester screening.  Baby M did so much moving around we got to spend more than 45 minutes watching, waiting for the tech to get the right image.  After that appointment confirmed that we had a healthy happy (waving!) baby, we started to share the news with more of our close friends and family!

July 29 (14 weeks):  Again - looking back I laugh at this picture because I see no "bump"...but that day at work I distinctly remember people commenting that I was starting to show.

August 6 & 7 (16 weeks):  We spent our anniversary weekend in Ogunquit Maine, and made baby M "Facebook official".  It was the most relaxing couple of days in the MOST perfect bed & breakfast.

August 17 & 20 (17 weeks):  This is where I felt like there was a definite "pop".  I posted my first bump picture on social media before heading to the gym one day....and the other picture was taken on cape cod visiting Ant's Aunt and Uncle.

August 23 (18 weeks):  We had our anatomy scan and found out that baby M was a GIRL!  We had already chosen both a girl and boy name, so at that moment she became Tilly Elizabeth Mascia.  I still can't believe how lucky we are.  Look at her cuddled up in there!

August 28 & 31 (19 weeks):  I can't deal with the cuteness of my two bebs together...

September 6 and 13 (20 & 21 weeks):  I had a hard time wrapping my head around the fact that I could feel her moving, but I had my first undeniable "flutter" the Sunday of week 20.  She still wasn't very active though - and any small flutters or movement were few and far between.

September 14 (21 weeks):  I have continued to be VERY lucky throughout this pregnancy, and have felt very healthy.  My biggest side effect has been exhaustion...pretty sure I slept most of June away.  To fight that, and maintain control of my back pain, I have been doing my kick boxing workout twice a week.

September 26 & 27 (23 weeks):  Ant and I flew to Iceland for a week - a vacation we had planned long before we knew it would end up being our baby moon :)  We had the best week hiking and exploring this beautiful country.  I could talk for days about Iceland - and just might at some point in the future here!  On our flight over, I felt her first stronger kick.  However, she continued to be very sporadic, and I could never get Ant to feel it.  Tuesday of that week - after a longgggg day of bumpy gravel roads, she got especially active and Ant felt her kick for the first time!  It was so special having  her with us on that trip.

I have no pictures of week 24 - but we are officially at 6 months.  Since Iceland, Tilly has gotten even more active, and Ant has gotten to experience a bit of the amount of moving and shaking she's doing in there!

In between all of this, we have done a TON more work around the house to get ready for her.  Since I work retail - we know the holiday season will come and go with very little free time...and I want to be able to enjoy that free time as much as possible.  That has meant making the nursery a priority, and I am so so thrilled with the progress.  More on that later...

We can not wait to meet our Tilly bug in four short months!

Banff National Park: The Food

I am notoriously awful at blogging about my trips - which I intend to change with this last one!  My roommate from college Katie and I just got back from 5 nights in Banff National Park - and it was an INCREDIBLE week.  Before I get too far behind I want to start sharing some of the details with you asap - because once you see the pictures I know you'll be wanting to book your trip!

I'm going to start with the food - because it will be the shortest.  We didn't start off with the best luck in food - but after a rough couple days we put our foots down, threw on some real clothes and lipstick - and found a few places I wouldn't recommend you miss if you're in the area!

The Maple Leaf Grill and Lounge:
The Maple Leaf was our first real food of the trip!  When we walked in they asked if we had reservations, but were able to quickly seat us without them.  The place was definitely fancier, but our jeans and tanks were not too casual.  The food was delicious!  Katie got the signature salmon dish - and I had a beet salad, and the scallop appetizer as my main course.  We enjoyed a nice glass of red wine after a long day of hiking, and treated ourselves to dessert as well - a cookies and cream cheesecake and a trio of creme brûlée (my biggest weakness!).  The menu is definitely on the more expensive side, but with the exchange rate is still ended up being less than a nice night out in CT!

(neither photo is mine - but basically our table and my dessert - from their website!)

Saltlik Banff:
Saltlik was a restaurant we had read about on a blog we'd found when searching Pinterest for Banff suggestions!  We decided to try it out for our final dinner in the national park.  When we arrived we decided to sit in their lower level, which had a slightly more casual menu - and sat out on the patio.  The weather was beautiful and the forecast had been rain all day - so we wanted to take full advantage!  Katie and I each got tacos from the appetizer menu - duck tacos for me and sushi tuna tacos for her - and we split sides of truffle mac & cheese and lobster mashed potatoes.  Let me tell you - YUM!  I tend to be nervous about buying lobster dishes from areas that are not on the water (the RI snob in me comes out occasionally) - but the reviews had all been positive so we decided it give it a go.  It was amazing!!  We left that meal stuffed and very very satisfied.
(again - not my photo - but the view explains why we sat outside!)

Whitebark Cafe:
The Whitebark Cafe is located at the Banff Aspen Lodge - which was actually the first hotel we stayed at in town.  On Monday, our last day before driving back to Calgary, we decided we were sick of hotel continental breakfast coffee, and were going to venture out for the real stuff.  Whitebark Cafe was the highest rated nearby, so we stopped on our way into town.  We wish we had tried it sooner!  The line to get in was crazy, which we assumed was just because the coffee was good.  As it turns out, the entire town of Banff had a major blackout the night before, and the Whitebark Cafe was one of the only places in town that had reopened the next AM!  (and ALSO delicious - bonus!) We got lots of inquiries as we wandered through the shops that morning about where we had managed to find coffee.  I got a soy misto - thanks boss for the new favorite drink!
(another photo from the site - sorry! I was too busy eating to take pictures anywhere apparently)

How do you decide where to eat when you travel?  Typically - my husband lives and dies by Yelp, and we generally mix that with a little bit of asking around....but Katie and I definitely got lucky with these finds!

The Blair Wife Project: Enter the Squad

This is quite possibly the most excited I have been for a post…largely in part because it has very little to do with me.  I have been pretty busy since the last post and as a result I now have six amazing friends who have agreed to be a part of our wedding. I’m beyond thrilled! Each of these ladies mean so much to me and I am eager to share a little bit of how we met and why I wanted them by my side when I say “I do”.

Alli - Maid of Honor
Alli is my little sister and my oldest friend. She is hardly little now but I am told many time people assume she is eight by the way I gush about her and in a way, it’s very difficult for me think of her otherwise. We were attached at the hip growing up, and by attached I mean I dragged her around by her pudgy little hand almost everywhere we went. Beheading Barbie dolls, climbing out on the roof, ice cream runs with Mom, hunting for shells in Cape Cod. The majority of my happiest memories are with my sister. But she is certainly not eight years old, she is smart, incredibly talented, and fierce. I am proud to be her sister every single day.

I’m not crying. It’s just dusty in here.

Sabrina – Matron of Honor
The sister-to-be! It is rather interesting to be in a position to gain an older sister. “Big Sister” has been exclusively and unchallengeable my title ever since Alli came into the picture and I never really imagined anything different. I always pined for a brother but I guess in my head he was always either younger than me or my long lost twin. So Sabrina has become the big sister I never knew I wanted. I absolutely love her. She’s fun, bubbly, and quite possibly one of the most thoughtful people I’ve ever known.

Allison –Bridesmaid
One the two bridesmaids (other than family) who pre-date Cody.  We met after Allison beat me out for the lead part in a community theatre production of Beauty and The Beast. And I don’t just mean she narrowly won the part – she was born to be Belle. Her and her sweet, sweet alto range had everyone, myself included, goggly-eyed and goose-bumped when she took the stage.  That summer we bonded over our exhaustion with camp jobs, our surprising whiffle ball talent, and double rehearsals (we were also in Godspell together that summer) and have stayed friends ever since.  I was THRILLED to be a part of her wedding and I’m excited she will now be in mine.

Katie –Bridesmaid
“Hi Friend!” Katie and I have only known each other for about three years but it feels like we have been friends for much longer. I suspect it has something to do with the fact our friendship was forged while on a 20-mile training run/ therapy session. We became solemates, if you will (runner’s humor). You just don’t let go of someone after you’ve shared that level of physical misery and mental dedication. We met and survived (barely) graduate school together and still manage to squeeze Sunday morning runs to this day.

Amanda-Bridesmaid
Mae-Mae. The other pre-Cody bridesmaid. Amanda was my first friend when I transferred high schools in junior year. Our friendship has withstood the test of time and long distance. Sleepovers in her basement-room, ridiculous photo shoots, free period walks to Aunt Sue’s house, conning the grumpy librarian into believing we needed to sit next to each other because our attempts at writing our own novel was for “AP English”. I love that we have always committed to stay in contact and that despite how many years have passed since high school we still wear friendship rings.  Fun fact- I was wearing it the night I got engaged!

Rachel-Bridesmaid
Last but not least, my dance partner. Nothing brings two people together faster than realizing they are next in line for the barrage of “when are you going to” interrogation by family. As I mentioned previously, Rachel and I have been planning this wedding since she and Ant got married.  I feel like we share similar brains from sense of our style (and priorities…hello first look) to the expectation of acceptable time for a vendor to reply to an email…I can’t thank her enough for responding to every “I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT IM DOING” or “I’M FREAKING OUT” text I’ve sent over the last five months.

What else have we been up to? We’ve already booked our photographer and DJ (did I mention I hate sitting idle?) and have a meeting with potential videographer.  We're waiting to hear back on our catering options from Mill 1 and I have my first appointment to try on dresses in late August.  Lots to do, lots to figure out but at least I have my squad to keep me from completely freaking out.

Alright - did you see that second to last sentence?  WEDDING DRESSES!  Is is August yet???  I literally can not wait to get together with all the ladies and see this stunning bride to be in some beautiful white gowns!

xoxo
